Building water & ice rescue capability after a man-overboard incident

After a man-overboard incident during mooring exposed a critical gap, IOSS helped NCOC turn newly bought rescue equipment into real capability — designing two professional courses, open-water rescue and ice rescue, now run as recurring drills for four years running.

The challenge

During a mooring operation an NCOC worker went overboard. The incident exposed a critical gap: the company had already invested in rescue equipment and immersion suits, but had no methodology, training or drilled competence to deploy them effectively — and no clear place to start.

What we did

  • Reviewed the incident, the equipment already procured and the operational context against international rescue best practice
  • Designed two professional, practice-led courses — open-water rescue and ice rescue — tailored to North Caspian conditions
  • Built the exercises around the rescue equipment and immersion suits NCOC had already bought, so crews train with their real kit
  • Established a recurring annual exercise programme, refreshed each year to reflect changing standards and lessons learned

Results

  • Two professional rescue courses created from the ground up and embedded in operations
  • Four consecutive years of recurring water- and ice-rescue drills
  • A workforce that can confidently use its rescue equipment under real conditions
  • Training kept current — updated every year to the latest trends and standards
